Providing a Birth Certificate is one of the consular services of the Vietnam Embassy in Canberra, Australia. Both procedures of issuing a birth certificate and passport for children born in Australia will be presented.
I. Procedures of Issuing Birth Certificate for Children Born in Australia
1. Notes:
- Parents have to submit documents for their child’s birth certificate within 60 days from the day the child was born;
- Vietnam Embassy in Australia will only issue a birth certificate for children owning Vietnamese citizens according to the Citizenship Law of Vietnam;
2. Required Documents:
2.1. For those whose parents are both Vietnamese (Vietnamese passport holders)
- Registration form for birth certificate and original proof of birth (for those who haven’t been issued a birth certificate before); or Declaration note to the Family Household Book and copy of the birth certificate issued by a foreign country (for those who have a birth certificate already);
- Both original and copy of the parents’ marriage certificate (in case of sending the dossier by post, a certified copy is required);
- 01 certified copy of the parents’ passports (in case of sending documents by post),
- 01 copy of a valid Australian visa of the parents (if the parents hold foreign passports at the same time, submit both copies of Vietnamese passport and the foreign passport);
- 01 express/ registered envelope (return envelope) clearly stating the recipient’s address (in case the documents are sent by mail and required to be returned by post).
- Application fee (payable in cash, Money Order or Bank Check, stating the beneficiary as “The Embassy of Vietnam”).
2.2. For those one of the parent is Vietnamese while the other is a foreigner
Besides those mentioned documents, applicants have to submit a written agreement of the parents on selecting Vietnamese nationality for their child.
2.3. For those whose parents do not have a marriage certificate

3. Processing Time
- For those whose parents are Vietnamese: 10 working days
- For other cases: around 15 working days
II. Procedures of Issuing Both Birth Certificate and Vietnamese Passport for Children Born in Australia
Required documents
- Registration form for birth certificate and original proof of birth (for those who haven’t been issued a birth certificate before); or Declaration note to the Civil Status Book and copy of the birth certificate issued by a foreign country (for those who have a birth certificate already);
- Passport application form;
- 01 written agreement on Child’s Citizenship as Vietnamese (in case one of the parents are Vietnamese and the other is a foreigner).
- Copy/JP/ Certified of the following documents: Marriage registration, father’s passport, mother’s passport;
- 01 express/ registered envelope (return envelope) clearly stating the recipient’s address (in case the documents are sent by mail and required to be returned by post).
- Application fee (payable in cash, Money Order or Bank Check, stating the beneficiary as “The Embassy of Vietnam”).
Please be noted that the full name of the child in the declaration forms must be consistent, in which the family name must come first in Vietnamese order. In addition, the given name and middle name should also be consistent in order.
